Hi Mez! Interesting ideas.

.....glad that u [& hopefully other empyrians] think so:)......

love the idea of rewriting your persona. I hadn't thought of it
quite like that though - oh, yes, in my MOOing the descriptions of my
rooms and objects and of myself are (were) definitely rewritten
regularly. In doing so the new replaces the old completely, allowing
me to change myself and my things and places in time as well as being
different from MOO to MOO.

..can u elaborate regarding yr sense of _self_ whilst MOOing, jill? were u conscious of building a sense of projected|fragmentary|psychasthenic self, or was the x.perience more 2 do with traditional [sensible|sensual] imagination? or a combo of both, purrr.haps?;)

..i'm really curious regarding sense orientation whilst occupying net-based worlds.....the transferral of sentience in[2] text-or-web.based domains via telesthesia........ie if its the product of collusive growth-patterns [eg thru consensual hallucinatory or simply assumed corporealities] or something else..........

In MUDs, though, I found my persona much
more stable. I could have different avatars, but once a female druid
thief, that avatar was always a female druid thief, and to
participate in the game satisfyingly I had to honour that. I don't
think I could have changed it if I wanted to, I had no write
privileges to my name, gender, species, profession. A very different
world-view to that in MOOs and IRCs.

..this reminds me of gamer presets, 1s that govern|guide the identity of the player...i'm thinking of online games like Everquest here..... these preset choices [eg choose 2 b a wizard or a necromancer, select certain hair colouring, gender, body type, class, skill-base etc] along with the prevalence of the hero's myth in pop culture seems 2 constrain a fair chunk of the open-ended possibility-spectrum in alternate i.d.conceptions........

Today I spend more time blogging and on discussions and mailinglists,
and I meet more and more people who care about a stable identity.
Writing piles up and whether or not someone uses their own name
they're recognisable as an entity in time. Search engines and and
linking structures encourage our stability in time; the longer I
maintain a web site with the same URL and more or less related topics
the more visitors I'll get. That's just the way it works. Staying the
same makes you more visible.

I guess things have always been that way? Or not?
>>

..not necessarily...its so context [& content:)] d.pendent.....

>> Do you see your use of language as being a constant for all these identity templates? And I guess I'm wondering about how you think about your use of these identities, which you leave open so they're clearly traceable to the same artist. What do you think is the difference between that and the way N.N., for instance, plays with identities which can't be traced back to any actual person or persons? >>

....my language use is more a ][crucial][ by-product of responding 2 data fluctuations swirling thru the niche of the net which i n.habit.....strands of reoccurring infomatics, or occurrences involving surrounding n.tities......the selection of incidents & stylistics vary according 2 which programmer languages|net.scripting formulas i'm manipulating|aping.... most ppl who r x.posed 2 these wurks don't have a clue about this underlying format|structure, which is more than ok....i try 2 cater 4 englishophiles as well, in that the english component is d.cipherable 2 the point of regular poetic comprehension.....

......overall, the language manipulation results may *seem* quite similar but r quite variable [in execution, anyway, mebbe not in terms of overall|relevant meaning-absorption;)]...in relation 2 the i.d templates, they function more as cues regarding co(i)ntent than actual avatars [which is y i prefer 2 tag them _netwurkers_].........this does differ dramatically from artists such as NN [ie integer/Netochka Nezvanova/=cw4t7abs], who converts identity in2 a profound game-like construction....

Looking forward to more :)
